HOW MUCH DOES IT COST? $0000000000.00
Dear Friends and Music Lovers,

Early concert goers are invited to arrive at 7:00 p.m. to be entertained by the "Woodwind Celebration" ensemble in the lobby while enjoying complimentary coffee and cookies. The performance is FREE to the public.
R. Jack Mercer came to Ontario, California in 1957 to work as the director of bands and instrumental music at Chaffey High School. He was a pioneer in hosting an annual parade and field tournament in Ontario, the first of its kind in the Inland Valley. In 1966, his band was selected to perform at the Coliseum for the halftime show at the Pro Bowl. Since his arrival to Ontario, Jack had an influence on nearly every band director in the Inland Valley. Also, he authored several books designed to help directors become successful in building and maintaining effective band programs.
After his retirement from education in 1985, Jack founded and directed the Chaffey Ontario Community Show Band for the next 26 years. His tireless efforts to give back to his community has resulted in yearly concert series provided free of cost to the citizens of Ontario and surrounding communities.
Jack Mercer was recognized throughout Southern California as an icon in music education. To acknowledge the man and his contributions to the arts for over a half-century, the City of Ontario named a bandstand located on Euclid Avenue and "C" Street in his honor. In addition, the band building on the campus of Chaffey High School was re-named the Jack Mercer Music Hall.
The Show Band will present a repertoire of Jack Mercer's favorite songs. The performance will begin with the Chaffey High School fight song, composed by Jack when he became the school's band director. It will be conducted by Assistant Director Pat Arnold who was one of Jack's students. Mike Pfister will perform a trumpet solo in "You Made Me Love You." Trumpeter Larry Cariato will be featured on a special presentation of Jack's original composition entitled "A Flash of Light." He wrote the piece in 1947 as a graduate project for his Masters Degree. Larry will perform the solo on a trumpet gifted to him by Maestro Mercer. Dancer Kathy Soderlund will dance to "Tea For Two." Two of Jack's favorite singers were Marilyne Sherwood and Brian Detwiler. Marilyne will sing "June In January," "You'll Never Know," and "That Old Black Magic." Brian will be featured on "Bali Ha'i," "Autumn Leaves," and "The Way You Look Tonight." John Holguin will sing "All The Things You Are" and Francisco Mowatt will perform a violin solo to "On The Sunny Side of the Street." Two of Jack's most favorite songs were "Stardust," which will feature trumpet soloist Steve Collins, and "I Left My Heart In San Francisco" with tenor saxophone soloist Pat Arnold. The outstanding musicians of the Show Band will be highlighted on "The Bandmaster," written in 2004 by Gabe Petrocelli for Maestro Mercer at the dedication of the Jack Mercer Music Hall.
The performance will be narrated by "The Friends of Ontario Chaffey Community Show Band" Board members Gary Keith and Dr. Kern Oduro.
Please be sure to join us for a memorable evening of celebration in a centennial tribute to Ontario's Music Man-Maestro Jack Mercer. Do not forget to invite your family and friends! The Show Band is honored to feature special guest artist Dr. Reed Gratz. Dr. Gratz has taught at several universities including the University of La Verne where he served as the Music Department Chair. In addition, he has been the recipient of many awards for jazz composition and teaching. He has also performed with numerous recording artists that include Herb Alpert, Bobby Shew, Buddy De Franco, and many others. In addition to composing music for more than a dozen plays, he has recorded several successful jazz albums that featured his original works. The Show Band will perform one of his jazz compositions entitled "A View from The South." He will also be a featured soloist in two pieces composed by Show Band Director Dr. Gabe Petrocelli entitled "Peach Margarita" and "Una Noche Espanola."
Gifted trumpet player Aaron Holguin, an Ontario native, is a graduate of Colony High School and former Ontario Chaffey Community Showband member. Aaron received his Bachelor of Arts degree in Music Performance from the Bob Cole Conservatory of Music (BCCM) California State University, Long Beach. His credits include performances with the CASMEC High School Honor Symphony, BCCM Wind Symphony, BCCM Concert Jazz Orchestra, Santa Monica College Symphony, Medieval Times Royal Trumpets, and Mordad Orquesta. Show Band musician Francisco Mowatt returns to center stage with a violin solo he arranged entitled "Czardas." Francisco shares the following about his unique musical background: "In the 4th grade my older sister decided to learn violin, my older brother chose the cello, and being the youngest I went for the viola. My father was an accountant and an accomplished classical pianist. Therefore, we had a small family string ensemble. I played viola throughout elementary, junior high, and high school orchestras. One day I borrowed my sister's violin, figured out the notes and never looked back. Entering college to study architecture, I taught myself first how to play the recorder, then clarinet, then saxophone, flute, and mandolin, and 3 chords on the guitar."
Guest conductor George Osorio is currently the Music Director and Conductor of the Southland Wind Ensemble, a community ensemble based in Ontario, CA. He is a recent graduate from California State University, Dominguez Hills (CSUDH) with a double major in Music Performance and Spanish Literature. During his musical studies, he was fortunate to study with professors such as Dr. Sylvia Lee Mann, who helped to develop his skills in conducting. Through her mentorship, George worked as the Assistant Conductor to both the CSUDH Orchestra and the Southland Symphony Orchestra. At the same time, he founded the Irvine Young Concert Artists Wind Ensemble, which introduced the musicians to ensemble performance outside of the orchestral setting. George has guest conducted wind bands such as the Peninsula Symphonic Winds, the Local 47 Band, the Santa Ana High School bands and orchestras. Currently, George is working with the Southland Symphony on an upcoming performance featuring the music of Florence Price, William Grant Still, Jordan Jinosko and more. George will conduct "Amparito Roca" and "Chiapanecas" and join the Show Band's euphonium section.
Dr. George Matamala has been a frequent soloist in Show Band concerts. He is an outstanding vocalist and well-accomplished bass player. George will sing "El Feo" and by special request, a song he sang with the Show Band several years ago entitled "Volver Volver."
