My father was an accountant and an accomplished classical pianist. Therefore, we had a small family string ensemble. I played viola throughout elementary, junior high, and high school orchestras. Entering college to study architecture, I taught myself first how to play the recorder, then clarinet, then saxophone, flute, and mandolin, and 3 chords on the guitar."

At the same time, he founded the Irvine Young Concert Artists Wind Ensemble, which introduced the musicians to ensemble performance outside of the orchestral setting. George has guest conducted wind bands such as the Peninsula Symphonic Winds, the Local 47 Band, the Santa Ana High School bands and orchestras. Dr. Mann shares, "The piece is conceived as a reflection and exploration of the Winter Solstice - the mystical time of year which moves us forward out of darkness and into light. The piece begins with an ethereal melody, and soon echoes of primitive drums are heard as the woodwinds begin the exploration of light returning to the earth. The piece progresses with the juxtaposition of a lively dance (presented by the oboe) with the triumphant brass figures. As the light forward in an unstoppable march - we reach the climax of the two primary musical characters (the dance and the fanfare), as the light finally bursts forth in triumph. Dr. Mann is thrilled to be working with the Show band again, and especially grateful to Dr. Petrocelli for adapting this work from the orchestral version to a version for band!" Dr. Mann will also grace the Show Band stage by performing a viola solo on Debussy's "Clair de Lune."
The outstanding musicians of the Show Band will open the performance with a John Williams work that he composed as the title theme for the intergalactic spectacular film "Star Wars." WHAT'S UP? Rhapsody in Blue: The Music of George Gershwin
WHERE? Gardiner W. Spring Auditorium
WHEN? Monday, June 20, 2022
WHAT TIME? 7:30 pm Sharp
HOW MUCH DOES IT COST? $0000000000.00
Dear Friends and Music Lovers,
The musicians of the Ontario Chaffey Community Show Band and Gary and Miriam Keith are proud to present "Rhapsody in Blue: The Music of George Gershwin" on Monday June 20, 2022 at 7:30 p.m. in Gardiner W. Spring Auditorium located on the campus of Chaffey High School at 1245 N. Euclid Ave. in Ontario. The Woodwind Celebration Ensemble will present a pre-concert recital in the auditorium lobby at 7:00 p.m. The concert will be narrated by David Allen, newspaper columnist for the Inland Valley Daily Bulletin, and Alan Wapner, Mayor pro Tem for the City of Ontario. The performance begins at 7:30 p.m. and is FREE to the public.
The June concert features a repertoire of George Gershwin's memorable compositions highlighted by a performance of "Rhapsody in Blue." Featured soloists include Show Band Assistant Director Pat Arnold, longtime Show Band friend and talented vocal soloist Marilyne Sherwood, talented vocalist and frequent guest Brian Detwiler, guest conductor and violoncello soloist Matthew Keating, and outstanding concert pianist Dr. Maria Perez.
The Show Band's program pays tribute to one of the icons of American music whose works spanned across both popular and classical genres. George Gershwin was born in Brooklyn New York on September 26, 1898 and passed away in Los Angeles on July 11, 1937 at the age of 38 from the ill-effects of a brain tumor. His enormous body of work, composed in slightly more than two decades, included orchestral compositions such as "Rhapsody in Blue," "Concerto in F," and "An American in Paris." Also works for solo piano, several operas including the groundbreaking Porgy and Bess, 18 Broadway Musicals, and over 500 popular songs.
Vocalist Marilyne Sherwood is no stranger to the Show Band stage as she has been a vocal soloist on numerous Show Band concerts over the past of two decades. Marilyne has a delightful and versatile singing style and will perform three Gershwin hits, "Embraceable You," "The Man I Love," and "Summertime" from the folk opera Porgy and Bess. Brian Detwiler has been entertaining Show Band audiences for many years. He possesses the talent to sing in a wide variety of musical genres. His interpretations of popular songs especially are both unique and captivating. Brian will be singing "I Got Plenty of Nuttin'" and "They Can't Take That away From Me." Pat Arnold will be the featured vocalist on "Our Love Is Here To Stay."
Matthew Keating is a gifted violoncellist, teacher, and conductor. Matthew began teaching cello at the Claremont Community School of Music in 2012 and became the Executive Director at the school in 2013, where he continues to pursue his passion for music education with students of all ages and backgrounds, working to preserve the arts for future generations. He will conduct several pieces and also be featured as the solo violoncellist on a special arrangement written for him by Dr. Petrocelli entitled "It Ain't Necessarily So."
Dr. Maria Perez returns this season to once again entertain Show Band concert goers. As a soloist, Dr. Perez has performed numerous recitals and a diverse repertoire of concerti. Her debut with the Orquesta Sinfonica de Puerto Rico was received with critical acclaim for her "captivating" and "bold" performances of Mendelssohn's "Concerto in G minor" and Gottschalk's "Grande Tarantelle." Other orchestral solo appearances include the Claremont Symphony Orchestra, Puerto Rico Conservatory Orchestra, Beach Cities Symphony, Pomona Concert Ensemble, Rancho Belago Symphony, Laguna Woods Symphony, and the Hour of Power Orchestra of the Crystal Cathedral. She has been a member of the piano faculty at the Claremont Community School of Music since 1993. Dr. Perez will perform Gershwin's "Prelude #1 for Solo Piano," his iconic "Rhapsody in Blue," and a special arrangement of "I Got Rhythm."
