Dear Friends and Music Lovers,

The musicians of the Ontario Chaffey Community Show Band and the Petrocelli Family are proud to present a concert titled "La Musica De Fiestas" on Monday October 24, 2022 at 7:30 p.m. in Gardiner W. Spring Auditorium located on the campus of Chaffey High School, 1250 N. Euclid Ave. in Ontario.  The Woodwind Celebration Ensemble will present a pre-concert recital in the auditorium lobby at 7:00 p.m.  The performance is FREE to the public.

The concert celebrates Latin music with a variety of genres that include marches, folk songs, popular music, and Latin Jazz.  The performance is highlighted by an array of outstanding soloists that include talented Show Band saxophonist and violinist Francisco Mowatt, Show Band saxophonist and dancer Kathy Soderlund, guitarist Ken Soderlund, guest vocalist Dr. George Matamala, guest conductor George Osorio, outstanding trumpet soloist Aaron Holguin, and renown jazz pianist, professor, and composer Dr. Reed Gratz.

The Show Band is honored to feature special guest artist Dr. Reed Gratz.  Dr. Gratz has taught at several universities including the University of La Verne where he served as the Music Department Chair.  In addition, he has been the recipient of many awards for jazz composition and teaching.  He has also performed with numerous recording artists that include Herb Alpert, Bobby Shew, Buddy De Franco, and many others.  In addition to composing music for more than a dozen plays, he has recorded several successful jazz albums that featured his original works.  The Show Band will perform one of his jazz compositions entitled "A View from The South."  He will also be a featured soloist in two pieces composed by Show Band Director Dr. Gabe Petrocelli entitled "Peach Margarita" and "Una Noche Espanola."

Gifted trumpet player Aaron Holguin, an Ontario native, is a graduate of Colony High School and former Ontario Chaffey Community Showband member.  Aaron received his Bachelor of Arts degree in Music Performance from the Bob Cole Conservatory of Music (BCCM) California State University, Long Beach.  His credits include performances with the CASMEC High School Honor Symphony, BCCM Wind Symphony, BCCM Concert Jazz Orchestra, Santa Monica College Symphony, Medieval Times Royal Trumpets, and Mordad Orquesta.  Aaron will perform a famous trumpet solo played by Rafael Mendez entitled "La Virgen de la Macarena."  The solo was performed by Mendez on the same stage many years ago when Maestro Jack Mercer was the Band Director at Chaffey High School.  Aaron will also be featured on flugelhorn in "Una Noche Espanola," a Latin Jazz piece he performed five years ago as a member of the Show Band.

Show Band musician Francisco Mowatt returns to center stage with a violin solo he arranged entitled "Czardas."  Francisco shares the following about his unique musical background: "In the 4th grade my older sister decided to learn violin, my older brother chose the cello, and being the youngest I went for the viola.  My father was an accountant and an accomplished classical pianist.  Therefore, we had a small family string ensemble.  I played viola throughout elementary, junior high, and high school orchestras.  One day I borrowed my sister's violin, figured out the notes and never looked back.  Entering college to study architecture, I taught myself first how to play the recorder, then clarinet, then saxophone, flute, and mandolin, and 3 chords on the guitar."

Guest conductor George Osorio is currently the Music Director and Conductor of the Southland Wind Ensemble, a community ensemble based in Ontario, CA.  He is a recent graduate from California State University, Dominguez Hills (CSUDH) with a double major in Music Performance and Spanish Literature.  During his musical studies, he was fortunate to study with professors such as Dr. Sylvia Lee Mann, who helped to develop his skills in conducting.  Through her mentorship, George worked as the Assistant Conductor to both the CSUDH Orchestra and the Southland Symphony Orchestra.  At the same time, he founded the Irvine Young Concert Artists Wind Ensemble, which introduced the musicians to ensemble performance outside of the orchestral setting.  George has guest conducted wind bands such as the Peninsula Symphonic Winds, the Local 47 Band, the Santa Ana High School bands and orchestras.  Currently, George is working with the Southland Symphony on an upcoming performance featuring the music of Florence Price, William Grant Still, Jordan Jinosko and more.  George will conduct "Amparito Roca" and "Chiapanecas" and join the Show Band's euphonium section.

Dr. George Matamala has been a frequent soloist in Show Band concerts.  He is an outstanding vocalist and well-accomplished bass player.  George will sing "El Feo" and by special request, a song he sang with the Show Band several years ago entitled "Volver Volver."

Show Band musician and dancer Kathy Soderlund has graced center stage for many years.  Her Latin dance performances are always well-received by concert goers.  Kathy has choreographed two selections that include the exciting Ernesto Lecuona composition "Malaguena" and the Carlos Santana hit "Europa" where she will be accompanied on guitar by her talented husband, Ken Soderlund.

The outstanding musicians of the Show Band will be featured on every selection and showcased in the opening pieces and concert's finale.  The concert will be narrated by Gil Zendejas, a member of Chaffey District Board of Trustees, and Elvia Rivas, a board member for the Ontario-Montclair Elementary School District.

WHERE? Gardiner W. Spring Auditorium
WHEN? Monday, September 26, 2022
WHAT TIME? 7:30 pm Sharp
HOW MUCH DOES IT COST? $0000000000.00

Dear Friends and Music Lovers,

The musicians of the Ontario Chaffey Community Show Band and the Leavitt Family are proud to open our 2022-2023 Season by presenting a concert titled "Music in Orbit" on Monday September 26, 2022 at 7:30 p.m. in Gardiner W. Spring Auditorium located on the campus of Chaffey High School, 1250 N. Euclid Ave. in Ontario.  The Woodwind Celebration Ensemble will present a pre-concert recital in the auditorium lobby at 7:00 p.m.  The concert is the Show Band's opening performance of their 2022-23 concert season.  The performance is FREE to the public.

This concert pays tribute to the memory of former Show Band saxophonist Wayne Leavitt.  The program includes a repertoire of musical selections that were written about the moon, stars, and planets.  Featured soloists include Show Band Assistant Director Pat Arnold along with musicians Natasha Le and Francisco Mowatt.  The special guest artist is Dr. Sylvia Lee Mann.  Pat Arnold will conduct several numbers and perform a tenor saxophone feature entitled "Moondance" as a dedication to Wayne Leavitt.  Also, he will sing the popular standard "Moonglow."  Gifted Show Band musician Natasha Le will be the featured vocal soloist on the timeless ballad "Moon River" and on "Fly Me To The Moon."  Talented Show Band saxophonist Francisco Mowatt will perform a selection from the musical Evita entitled "The Night Of a Thousand Stars."  He will demonstrate his musical talents by playing the solo on the violin.

The Show Band once again is proud to feature special guest artist Dr. Sylvia Lee Mann, renown composer, author, educator, violist, and conductor of the Southland Symphony and Chorus.  Dr. Mann appears with many musical ensembles in the Southern California area and across the nation.  Currently on the faculty at Chaffey College and St. Teresa Open Catholic Seminary, Dr. Mann has also served at California State University Dominguez Hills and Centenary College.  Dr. Mann is the Pastor and Minister of Music at Bethel Congregational Church, UCC, of Ontario.  She is also the Music Director and Conductor of the Temecula Valley Jr. Youth Symphony, and a popular guest conductor throughout Southern California.  The Show Band will perform under Dr. Mann's direction her original composition entitled "Solstice Celebration - Moonfire Rising."  The work was originally commissioned and composed for the Culver City Symphony's historic concert titled, "The American Beat - Women Composers."

Dr. Mann shares, "The piece is conceived as a reflection and exploration of the Winter Solstice - the mystical time of year which moves us forward out of darkness and into light.  The piece begins with an ethereal melody, and soon echoes of primitive drums are heard as the woodwinds begin the exploration of light returning to the earth.  The piece progresses with the juxtaposition of a lively dance (presented by the oboe) with the triumphant brass figures.  As the light forward in an unstoppable march - we reach the climax of the two primary musical characters (the dance and the fanfare), as the light finally bursts forth in triumph.  Dr. Mann is thrilled to be working with the Show band again, and especially grateful to Dr. Petrocelli for adapting this work from the orchestral version to a version for band!"  Dr. Mann will also grace the Show Band stage by performing a viola solo on Debussy's "Clair de Lune."

The outstanding musicians of the Show Band will open the performance with a John Williams work that he composed as the title theme for the intergalactic spectacular film "Star Wars."  The Show Band will perform the beautiful ballad "Stella By Starlight" in remembrance of Stella Bode, a supporter of the Show Band since its inception in 1985; and Hoagy Carmicheal's timeless melody "Stardust."  The concert's finale will feature the Show Band in Gustav Holst's "The Planets."

The concert will be narrated by Gary Ovitt, retired Mayor for the City of Ontario, retired Supervisor for the Count of San Bernardino, and President of The Friends of The Show Band; and Susan Petrocelli, retired Director for the Chaffey Joint Union High School District.

The June concert features a repertoire of George Gershwin's memorable compositions highlighted by a performance of "Rhapsody in Blue."  Featured soloists include Show Band Assistant Director Pat Arnold, longtime Show Band friend and talented vocal soloist Marilyne Sherwood, talented vocalist and frequent guest Brian Detwiler, guest conductor and violoncello soloist Matthew Keating, and outstanding concert pianist Dr. Maria Perez.

The Show Band's program pays tribute to one of the icons of American music whose works spanned across both popular and classical genres.  George Gershwin was born in Brooklyn New York on September 26, 1898 and passed away in Los Angeles on July 11, 1937 at the age of 38 from the ill-effects of a brain tumor.  His enormous body of work, composed in slightly more than two decades, included orchestral compositions such as "Rhapsody in Blue," "Concerto in F," and "An American in Paris."  Also works for solo piano, several operas including the groundbreaking Porgy and Bess, 18 Broadway Musicals, and over 500 popular songs.

Vocalist Marilyne Sherwood is no stranger to the Show Band stage as she has been a vocal soloist on numerous Show Band concerts over the past of two decades.  Marilyne has a delightful and versatile singing style and will perform three Gershwin hits, "Embraceable You," "The Man I Love," and "Summertime" from the folk opera Porgy and BessBrian Detwiler has been entertaining Show Band audiences for many years.  He possesses the talent to sing in a wide variety of musical genres.  His interpretations of popular songs especially are both unique and captivating.  Brian will be singing "I Got Plenty of Nuttin'" and "They Can't Take That away From Me."  Pat Arnold will be the featured vocalist on "Our Love Is Here To Stay."

Matthew Keating is a gifted violoncellist, teacher, and conductor.  Matthew began teaching cello at the Claremont Community School of Music in 2012 and became the Executive Director at the school in 2013, where he continues to pursue his passion for music education with students of all ages and backgrounds, working to preserve the arts for future generations.  He will conduct several pieces and also be featured as the solo violoncellist on a special arrangement written for him by Dr. Petrocelli entitled "It Ain't Necessarily So."

Dr. Maria Perez returns this season to once again entertain Show Band concert goers.  As a soloist, Dr. Perez has performed numerous recitals and a diverse repertoire of concerti.  Her debut with the Orquesta Sinfonica de Puerto Rico was received with critical acclaim for her "captivating" and "bold" performances of Mendelssohn's "Concerto in G minor" and Gottschalk's "Grande Tarantelle."  Other orchestral solo appearances include the Claremont Symphony Orchestra, Puerto Rico Conservatory Orchestra, Beach Cities Symphony, Pomona Concert Ensemble, Rancho Belago Symphony, Laguna Woods Symphony, and the Hour of Power Orchestra of the Crystal Cathedral.  She has been a member of the piano faculty at the Claremont Community School of Music since 1993.  Dr. Perez will perform Gershwin's "Prelude #1 for Solo Piano," his iconic "Rhapsody in Blue," and a special arrangement of "I Got Rhythm."

Euclid Ave. in Ontario, between "B" and "C" Streets.  The concert will be narrated by Paul Leon, Mayor for the City of Ontario and Dr. Chris Hollister, Assistant Superintendent for the Chaffey Joint Unified School District.  The outdoor performance begins at 7:30 p.m. and is FREE to the public.  Don't forget to bring your comfortable lawn chairs, but there will also be 60 chairs set up for concert goers to use.

The April program is highlighted by a repertoire of memorable hits from the golden age of popular music-The 50's!  The concert features the talented Harmony Sisters, Tom "Elvis" Hill, Mike Pfister, and Assistant Director Pat Arnold.  In addition, the Show Band will also pay tribute to Neil Foster, a member of the Show Band trumpet section who passed away last month.

The outstanding musicians of the Show Band will open the performance with Bill Haley's rousing "Rock Around the Clock" featuring a tenor saxophone solo by Pat Arnold.  Show Band trumpeter Mike Pfister will play a flugelhorn solo entitled "Your Smile," a composition written by Show Band Director Gabe Petrocelli that was first performed a number of years ago by Neil Foster.  Show Band euphonium player Tom "Elvis" Hill has been entertaining audiences for over a decade with his talented impersonation of the King of Rock 'n Roll Elvis Presley.  He will be featured in three exciting Elvis Presley hits entitled "All Shook Up," "Blue Suede Shoes," and "Suspicious Minds."  Assistant Director Pat Arnold is an outstanding instrumentalist and also a very talented vocalist.  In addition to performing on the saxophone and performing as a vocal soloist, he will conduct several of the songs performed by Tom "Elvis" Hill.

The special guest artists of the evening are The Harmony Sisters.  They have been singing together since 2002 as the vocalists for the Bill Blanchard Little Big Band.  The group consists of Beverly Crowe, Alto; Stacy Sturgis, Soprano; and Renata Quijada, Second Soprano.  Bill loved the music of the famous female trios like the Andrews Sisters and other groups and wrote most of the vocal arrangements for the trio and the Little Big Band.

The Harmony Sisters will perform a variety of songs that were popularized in the 50's.  Their trio repertoire includes "Music Music Music," "It's All In the Game," "Sugar Time," "Since I Don't Have You," and "Teach Me Tonight."  Beverly will be the featured soloist on "Walking After Midnight," Stacy in "What A Difference A Day Makes," and Renata in "Who's Sorry Now."  Also, they will join vocal soloist Pat Arnold as the background for "I Only Have Eyes For You."
