Dear Friends and Music Lovers,

The musicians of the Ontario Chaffey Community Show Band and Gary and Miriam Keith are proud to present "Rhapsody in Blue: The Music of George Gershwin" on Monday June 20, 2022 at 7:30 p.m. in Gardiner W. Spring Auditorium located on the campus of Chaffey High School at 1245 N. Euclid Ave. in Ontario.  The Woodwind Celebration Ensemble will present a pre-concert recital in the auditorium lobby at 7:00 p.m.  The concert will be narrated by David Allen, newspaper columnist for the Inland Valley Daily Bulletin, and Alan Wapner, Mayor pro Tem for the City of Ontario.  The performance begins at 7:30 p.m. and is FREE to the public.

The June concert features a repertoire of George Gershwin's memorable compositions highlighted by a performance of "Rhapsody in Blue."  Featured soloists include Show Band Assistant Director Pat Arnold, longtime Show Band friend and talented vocal soloist Marilyne Sherwood, talented vocalist and frequent guest Brian Detwiler, guest conductor and violoncello soloist Matthew Keating, and outstanding concert pianist Dr. Maria Perez.

The Show Band's program pays tribute to one of the icons of American music whose works spanned across both popular and classical genres.  George Gershwin was born in Brooklyn New York on September 26, 1898 and passed away in Los Angeles on July 11, 1937 at the age of 38 from the ill-effects of a brain tumor.  His enormous body of work, composed in slightly more than two decades, included orchestral compositions such as "Rhapsody in Blue," "Concerto in F," and "An American in Paris."  Also works for solo piano, several operas including the groundbreaking Porgy and Bess, 18 Broadway Musicals, and over 500 popular songs.

Vocalist Marilyne Sherwood is no stranger to the Show Band stage as she has been a vocal soloist on numerous Show Band concerts over the past of two decades.  Marilyne has a delightful and versatile singing style and will perform three Gershwin hits, "Embraceable You," "The Man I Love," and "Summertime" from the folk opera Porgy and BessBrian Detwiler has been entertaining Show Band audiences for many years.  He possesses the talent to sing in a wide variety of musical genres.  His interpretations of popular songs especially are both unique and captivating.  Brian will be singing "I Got Plenty of Nuttin'" and "They Can't Take That away From Me."  Pat Arnold will be the featured vocalist on "Our Love Is Here To Stay."

Matthew Keating is a gifted violoncellist, teacher, and conductor.  Matthew began teaching cello at the Claremont Community School of Music in 2012 and became the Executive Director at the school in 2013, where he continues to pursue his passion for music education with students of all ages and backgrounds, working to preserve the arts for future generations.  He will conduct several pieces and also be featured as the solo violoncellist on a special arrangement written for him by Dr. Petrocelli entitled "It Ain't Necessarily So."

Dr. Maria Perez returns this season to once again entertain Show Band concert goers.  As a soloist, Dr. Perez has performed numerous recitals and a diverse repertoire of concerti.  Her debut with the Orquesta Sinfonica de Puerto Rico was received with critical acclaim for her "captivating" and "bold" performances of Mendelssohn's "Concerto in G minor" and Gottschalk's "Grande Tarantelle."  Other orchestral solo appearances include the Claremont Symphony Orchestra, Puerto Rico Conservatory Orchestra, Beach Cities Symphony, Pomona Concert Ensemble, Rancho Belago Symphony, Laguna Woods Symphony, and the Hour of Power Orchestra of the Crystal Cathedral.  She has been a member of the piano faculty at the Claremont Community School of Music since 1993.  Dr. Perez will perform Gershwin's "Prelude #1 for Solo Piano," his iconic "Rhapsody in Blue," and a special arrangement of "I Got Rhythm."

Dear Friends and Music Lovers,

The musicians of the Ontario Chaffey Community Show Band and the memory of Mary Watson-Ortiz are proud to present "Celebrate the Season" on Monday December 13, 2021 at 7:30 p.m. in historic Gardiner Spring Auditorium.  The concert will be the first indoor Show Band performance since February 2020.  Please note that in compliance with the health restrictions currently in-place due to the pandemic, all concert attendees must wear a face mask during the performance.  Gardiner W. Spring Auditorium is located on the campus of Chaffey High School at 1245 N. Euclid Ave. in Ontario.  The performance is FREE to the public.  Parking is available in both the Fourth and Fifth Street Parking Lots.

The holiday program features Martene Craig and her Joy Ringers, Singers and Strings, a handbell, vocal and string ensemble from Southern California.  They have been delighting audiences for years with a repertoire of spirituals, hymns, gospel songs, folk, country, patriotic, and show tunes.  The Ringers showcase special ringing techniques including the use of mallets, hand chimes, and solo ringing.  Seasonally, they present patriotic and Christmas performances, often with a string orchestra, children's choir, and dancers.  They have graced the Show Band stage on several past concerts.  The ensemble will give a pre-concert performance on-stage at 7:00 p.m.  During the main performance, they will be featured in "Christmas Eve - Sarajevo," "Go Tell It," "Joy To the World," and "O Come All Ye Faithful."

Our special guest artist is concert pianist and teacher Dr. Maria Perez.  She was born in San Juan, Puerto Rico, where she received her early musical training.  She earned her Bachelor's Degree in Piano Performance from the prestigious Eastman School of Music in Rochester, New York, and both her Masters and Doctoral Degrees from the University of Washington.  She is a frequent soloist in orchestras throughout Southern California and has been a member of the music faculty of the Claremont Community School of Music since 1993.  Dr. Perez is no stranger to the Show Band having performed a number of concerts as a soloist; her most memorable being George Gershwin's Rhapsody in Blue.  She will perform a solo piano piece entitled "Canciones Para Piano #1" and "Waltz Fantasia," a "mini" piano concerto with band accompaniment.  Both works were composed for her by Dr. Gabe Petrocelli.

The outstanding musicians of the Show Band are featured on several holiday selections that include a medley of popular Christmas carols; Bach's "Jesu, Joy of Man's Desiring," an exciting arrangement of "God Rest Ye Merry Gentlemen," the timeless holiday song "White Christmas," and "Silent Night."

Join us for a great night of Holiday music and put some green stuff in the Hungry Tuba.  This concert will be broadcast on local Ontario cable Channel 3.  Check your cable listings for the date and time.  For additional information regarding these performances or the rest of Show Band's upcoming concert season, please check our website at www.showband.net and follow the Show Band on Facebook, Twitter, YouTube, and Instagram.

Dear Friends and Music Lovers,

It is unfortunate that the weatherman is not cooperating with us today, Monday October 25th, the night of our "Viva La Musica" concert in front of Gardiner Spring Auditorium.  We have been tracking the storm very closely and since yesterday it looked like it might miss us as the center of the storm moved north instead of south.  But at Noon today we had to make a call and the window of opportunity was just too close for comfort; too much valuable equipment to get wet; and too much work to set up only to be rained on.  Since we are unable to move the concert indoors because of health restrictions, the performance will be postponed until the following Monday evening on November 1st.  Be sure to alert your family and friends who were planning to attend our performance.  Again, the concert is postponed, and has been rescheduled for the following Monday evening on November 1st.

My apologies for the unsettling situation.  Such are the times to which the performing arts must adapt!  The good news is that we really could use the rain here in California!  We look forward to seeing all of you next week!!

Your Band Director,
Gabe
